2024/25 Artists-in-Residence

From 30 April 2024 to 14 July 2024, an Artists-in-Residence (AIR) programme will run in the Veranda Studio at Midland Junction Arts Centre (MJAC). The Veranda Studio will be open when MJAC is open and artists will be sharing their expertise and enthusiasm for their work with visitors. The artists will also be able to provide background information on works in the exhibition if you ask them. Many will provide ‘sit and sew’ activities which the general public can take part in and many will have work for sale.

Susan Sheath (30 Apr – 12 May)

I am primarily a quilter working in bright cotton and silk fabrics.  I dye silk scraps from wedding dresses to use in my work.  Rather than follow tradition and patterns, I have an improvisational style, designing a piece on my design wall as I go.  I simply love bold colour and that is evident in my work.

Marilyn Clark-Murphy (30 Apr – 12 May)

I am an ‘all round’ textile artist.  I’ll use, or at least try, any technique that uses fabric and thread to create. I prefer to work with recycled materials, gathering materials when I come across them.  As I work, I find myself returning to particular themes.  My principal, and rather eclectic, sources of inspiration include: landscape, flora, anything feline, history in general and women’s history in particular.  I am very aware of “standing on the shoulders of giants”; everything we achieve is a continuation of, and dependant upon, the work of our ancestors.  We owe a huge debt to those who went before us.  This sentiment is now reflected in much of my work.

Jan Rowe (14 May – 26 May)

I interpret my photos and drawings of nature and the landscapes sing randomly cut pieces of fabric to collage, as a painter would use paint.  Once the pieces are placed, they are stitched in position.  Texture, finer details, shading and highlighting are added with thread painting and fabric pens.  In the studio I will be working on a project of my own but will also have two projects to encourage community involvement.  Both will use the fabric collage technique, there will be a black swan and cygnets for adults and a rainbow fish for children.

Kerry Moore (14 May – 26 May)

I am primarily a hand stitcher and use crazy patch as my creative medium for trying a variety of stitches, adding bling and lace. A crazy quilt doesn’t have to be crazy, it can also be coordinated and very simple. I make quilts, bags, purses, cushions and wall hangings using rescued fabrics including fine and heavier silks, cottons, acrylics and polyesters, light and heavy linens, velvets and older linens like embroidered doilies and tablecloths. I will be working on a selection of these useful and beautiful items in the Veranda Studio.

Nadja Sevic (28 May – 2 Jun)

In my current practice I create images by cutting loose fabric, securing with tacky glue, placing tulle over the top and quilting with a domestic sewing machine. While in the Veranda Studio I will be displaying this work plus some of my other completed projects; including scarves made from felt and silk, statement necklaces (some decorated with Swarovski crystals) and decor pieces resembling vases/bowls made from thread and fabric.

Janine Judge 4 Jun – 16 Jun

I love to explore the amazing world we live in and find inspiration everywhere, from breathtaking landscapes to intricate life forms.  I translate these experiences using fabric and thread into vibrant works of art. I start by creating a sun dyed background. Then, through fabric collages, I outline the main designs. The real magic happens with thread painting – freehand machine embroidery.  Adding intricate details that breathe energy and vitality into my creations bring them to life.

Louise Wells (18 Jun – 30 Jun)

Louise Wells has regularly exhibited her work since 2009 and is a recent finalist in Bunbury Biennale 2023, International Fibre Art Australia 2023, twentyFIVE+ 2022, York Botanic Art Prize 2021, Collie Art Prize (CAP) and Australian Textile Award 2020. Solo exhibitions include Of Our Time – Ordinary Lives 2018, Suburban Secrets 2021. Louise Co-coordinates the Inglewood Arts Hub and Quilt and Textile Study Group WA.

Anne Williams (18 Jun – 30 Jun)

Anne Williams has been a lifelong maker across a range of textile crafts. Hand stitching on cloth and with fibres forms the core of her current practice. She has participated in many group and juried shows, taught community workshops and in Steiner School teacher training.  She has had 2 solo exhibitions (MAC 2016, MJAC 2019) and a duo exhibition (MAC 2022). Her work is in private collections.

Marten van Zuilen (2 Jul – 14 Jul)

Martien van Zuilen is an established fibre artist specialising in the handmade felt medium; transforming loose woollen fibres into distinctive, narrative works of art, and often incorporating mixed media and found objects. Foremost in Martien’s creative practice is an intentional engagement with place-based making, local materials, and the process of making, resulting in interpretative and reflective works in visual and narrative form.  During her stitched and bound residency at MJAC, Martien will further investigate the material connections of wool fibres, handmade paper, embossing, and stitch.   A participatory community project will also be offered, to foster immersive engagement with the stitched & bound exhibition.
