Helen O’Hara is a mixed-media, textile artist and art educator living in Western Australia. Helen is mostly self-taught although she trained as a primary school art teacher before emigrating from the United Kingdom to Australia.

She loves combining materials and techniques and re-purposing objects, materials and tools in new ways unimagined by their manufacturers. Helen’s art often combines printing of many types with drawing, collage and stitch.

Themes include nature, geology, cosmology and architecture represented in abstract ways. Helen also enjoys art journaling as a kind of everyday therapy.

She is a real collector and hoarder of art materials and scraps and has named her blog “The Hoarders Art Room” after this trait.

Helen plans to use her time in the studios to make some Gelli printed fabrics combined with lino cuts and other block printing and stencils.

I want to make a quilt which I have the working title “If Klimt Was A Quilter”. I’m planning to make lots of patterned fabric in the style of Gustav Klimt and see where it goes from there. Maybe combining with portraits like in his “Mother and Child” or perhaps using the printed fabrics in an improvisational style, cutting and chopping them to make something like Klimt’s “Knight” which is part of the “Stoclet Frieze”.

Result Notifications

The outcome of the juror process has been decided.  Individual emails were sent to all stitched and bound entrants on Friday, to which was attached a pdf personalised package which contained your specific result(s).  However, it is understood that some of you might not have received this email (apparently a common problem with gmails that include a pdf attachment!).

Please advise immediately to Susan: waqasandb@gmail.com if you have not got your email and she will try and sort it out.  If you have received the package, you do not need to respond.
